What's different with ATSC 3.0? Combining Broadcast and Broadband

ATSC 3.0 is a significant departure from previous broadcasting standards particularly from the transport up through content presentation. ATSC 3.0 is the first broadcast standard with a transport based on Internet Protocol (IP) and this fundamental change is leading to many synergies between the traditional broadcast television and so-called "over-the-top" broadband distribution of television content. Further, ATSC 3.0 leverages many technologies previously only deployed in broadband content distribution and on the Internet providing opportunities for common approaches in both worlds.

This presentation will provide an overview of key technologies in ATSC 3.0 starting with the IP layer and moving up through signaling and announcement to the interactive presentation of content that enable the convergence of broadcast and broadband. Examples will be provided showing how television and the consumption of television need not be siloed based on the means of delivery, that is, broadcast or broadband. Additionally, the implications on the production and distribution of content in the new converged environment of NextGen TV will be discussed.
