Jian Song received his B. Eng and Ph.D degrees from Electrical Engineering Department, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China in 1990 and 1995, respectively and worked for the same university upon his graduation. He then conducted the Postdoctoral research work in The Chinese University of Hong Kong and University of Waterloo in Canada in 1996 and 1997, respectively. He has been with the Advance Development Group of Hughes Network Systems in USA for seven years before going back to join the faculty team of Tsinghua in 2005 as a full professor. He won company achievement award due to his outstanding contribution in the electronic scanning antenna in 2001. Dr. Song is the Director of DTV Technology R&D Center, one of the major technical contributors for the Chinese terrestrial transmission standard of digital TV, and also the vice dean of the Research Institute of Information Technology of Tsinghua University. He is very active in the community, serving as committee members for many international conferences, giving invited talks and acting as panelist. He is the Chairman of IEEE BTS Beijing Chapter since 2007 and successfully organized the workshop in digital mobile multimedia broadcasting area associated with ICC’2008 in Beijing. He also has strong tie with industry and now serves on the Communications Technologies Domain Advisory Committee of Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute. Dr. Song’s research interest is in the physical layer transmission technology and he has been working in different areas, such as optical, satellite, wireless, and powerline communications. His current research interest includes the digital TV broadcasting such as the terrestrial transmission protocol/standard, network convergence, and eHealth-related topics via broadcasting technologies as well as systems/networks.
Dr. Song has published more than 80 journal and conference papers, and holds one US and two Chinese patents with several others pending both in US and China.
